How is working on the mainframe similar to software development?
The concepts are very similar, but the programming languages you use (JCL, REXX, and Assembler) have different syntax. If you already know Java, that's great, because it is often used in the mainframe. SQL skills also translate well, as you will interact with similar databases.
What makes mainframes so important?
Mainframes have run for more than 50 years with 71% of Fortune 500 companies utilizing them. They handle over 12.6 billion credit card, ATM transaction per day. They are central to many companies' technological infrastructures, so they are crucial for many businesses.
How do I know mainframe is right for me?
Here are a few resources you can utilize to gauge your interest in mainframe.
IBM Z XPLORE is a free platform where you can get hands-on experience across fundamental to advanced concepts like JCL, Linux, and TSO/ISPF. 'What on Earth is Mainframe' is a good introductory book on z/OS operating systems.
How does training work? What is the timeline?
The entirety of the 1 month paid training is remote and online from your own home. The material is designed to give you an overview of IBM Z system, knowledge of mainframe programming languages, practice with mainframes, and then JES2 Operation. Skills will be delivered in a blend of remote, instructor-led, web-based and self-paced accelerated learning path. The training will be followed by a 2-5 month paid, remote apprenticeship.
How many hours per week is the training and apprenticeship?
The training will be conducted full-time, 40 hours/week (no overtime), M-F in Central Standard time. The apprenticeship will require 3 days a week, 12-hour shifts (Either 7am-7pm or 7pm-7am).
I do not live near any hybrid office locations, does the Fortune 500 company support relocation?
We are recruiting individuals who can work in a hybrid capacity from their current location once they transition from training/apprenticeship to permanent full-time employees. We do not offer relocation support.
Will I get paid during the training and apprenticeship?
Yes! You will get paid $25/hour for the duration of the training and apprenticeship. If your apprenticeship lasts 6 months or more there will be a pay increase based on performance. After the apprenticeship is completed, the hiring company has the option to convert you to full-time more permanently and receive a compensation boost.
How likely am I to convert to full-time?
Very likely. Historically, all previous candidates have converted to full-time employment. So if you show up every day and work hard, your chances are excellent.
How much money would I make after conversion?
Historically, our average starting salary is between $63,000/yr - $79,000/yr for this program. Therefore, candidates who complete the paid apprenticeship with our partner company should expect a salary in this range.
Is the program available to individuals on OPT or requiring H1-B visas?
Unfortunately, no. You must be a US Citizen or Green Card holder in order to apply.
Will the company supply any materials for me to complete the training?
Yes. The company will provide a PC that has VPN access. In some cases a monitor may also be provided but it is not guaranteed.
